Hi Spanish blog readers. This week Jake is very ill (out yesterday and today). As a result, our video didn’t get up yesterday. I thought I would take the opportunity to give you an impromptu lesson on how to have empathy in Spanish.
I hope you take the chance to wish Jake, and anyone else who is ill from our Facebook group, a nice “Get well soon”. Please join us on Facebook Fiesta Friday to talk and chat with others.
Here is the vocabulary:
| I’m sorry you feel sick. | Lo siento que te sientes enfermo. |
| I can only imagine how you must feel. | Sólo puedo imaginar como debe sentirse. |
| What a shame! | ¡Qué pena! |
| What a shame! (another variation) | ¡Qué lástima! |
| Is there anything I can do to help? | ¿Hay algo que puedo hacer para ayudar? |
| I hope you get well (recover) soon! | ¡Espero que te recuperes pronto! |
| You will be in our thoughts and prayers. | Vas a estar en nuestros pensamientos y oraciones. |
| Poor thing/guy! | ¡Pobrecito! |
| Poor thing/girl! | ¡Pobrecita! |
| I hope things get better soon! | ¡Espero que las cosas se mejoren pronto! |
Again, I think it would be great if you all helped me show sympathy for Jake on Facebook – if enough people do it, I’ll text him and have him look at all of your comments.
Note: these Spanish phrases are also useful if you have a Spanish-speaking neighbor or coworker who isn’t feeling well.
Remember to Join us on Facebook Fiesta Friday – ¡Hasta luego!

Spanish Lesson: Greetings
Are you having trouble being able to speak Spanish with others? I’m talking about the real Spanish you would actually use, like “greetings”. This short will enable you to practice with others for Facebook Fiesta Friday and in real, person-to-person communication.
Here is a little vocabulary to get you started:
| Hi, my name is_____. | Hola, me llamo _____. |
| What’s your name? (formal) | ¿Cómo se llama usted? |
| What’s your name? (informal) | ¿Cómo te llamas? |
| How are you? (formal) | ¿Cómo está usted? |
| How are you? (informal) | ¿Cómo estás? |
| How are things? | ¿Qué tal? |
| I am doing well, thanks, and you? (formal) | Estoy bien, gracias. ¿y usted? |
| I am doing well, thanks, and you? (informal) | Estoy bien, gracias. ¿y tú? |
| Good morning. | Buenos días. |
| Good afternoon. | Buenas tardes. |
| Good evening. | Buenas noches. |
| Nice to meet you. | Mucho gusto. |
| See you later. | Hasta luego. |
There are plenty more free Spanish greetings where that came from. It seems like I write this almost every time, but have a positive attitude as you learn Spanish. You can have fun, especially as you practice your Spanish greetings and meet new people. Believe it or not, meeting new people in a new language can be fun. I know from experience.
