Luis Y todavía tengo problemas algunas veces And I still have problems sometimes
aunque con todo el tiempo que llevo, although with as long as I’ve been here,
pues ya no..no me crea tanto problema well now it doesn’t…doesn’t create as much of a problem
como antes. as before.
Pero recuerdo los primeros, eh, But I remember the first, uh,
sobre todo los primeros años, eh, above all the first years, uh,
cuando estaba estudiando when I was studying
e iba--y tenía que ir a la universidad and I went—and I had to go to the university
y ver a los profesores. and see the professors.
Raquel Hmm. Hmm.
Luis Pues, normalmente yo lo que hacía Well, normally what I would do
era aparecer por allí, eh, was show up around there, uh,
sobre las doce. around twelve o'clock.
Y siempre me encontraba que And I always found that
no había nadie en ningún sitio porque there wasn't anyone anywhere because
todo el mundo estaba con el…con el almuerzo, everybody (the whole world) was at lunch,
estaba comiendo, y yo decía was eating, and I said,
“¡Pero esta gente! “These people!
¡Qué cosa más rara! What a strange thing!
Pero, ¿cómo es que están con el almuerzo But, how is it that they’re at lunch
si han desayunado hace cuatro horas if they've eaten breakfast four hours ago
y ya están comiendo?” and they’re already eating?”
Raquel Sí. Yeah.
Luis Y…y eso es un poco por lo que… And…and that is somewhat because of what…
lo que dices tú what you are saying
que yo seguía y todavía sigo también that I kept going and still keep going as well
con el…con el horario de comidas español. with the…with the Spanish meal schedule.
Raquel Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Luis Entonces ahora soy más consciente de que So now I am more aware that
aunque tengo otro horario, even though I have another schedule,
la gente también tiene un horario diferente. people also have a different schedule.
Pero entonces, eh, But anyway, uh,
me pasaba a lo mejor un mes, I spent probably a month,
un mes y medio, a month and a half,
intentando hablar con un profesor trying to talk with a professor
o una cosa de esas. or something like that.
Y yo decía, And I said,
“¿Pues es que no trabaja nunca?” “Well is it that they never work?”
Raquel Sí. Yes.
Luis “¿Es que nunca están aquí?” “Is it that they’re never here?”
“Siempre están en una—comiendo” [sí] They’re always at a—eating” [yes]
o una cosa así. or something like that.
Raquel Sí. Yes.
Luis No están nunca las—en las oficinas.” “They’re never-in their offices.”
Raquel Sí, yo recuerdo los primeros meses Yes, I remember the first months
cuando vine a EEUU, when I came to the United States,
que fuimos a casa de unos amigos a comer and we went to some friends' house to eat
y eran como las cinco y media de la tarde. And it was around 5:30 in the evening.
Luis Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Raquel Y nos pusieron un plato de lentejas And they gave us a plate of lentils
y yo pensé, and I thought,
“¿Qué hago? “What am I doing?
¿A las 5:30 de la tarde, At 5:30 in the afternoon,
comiendo un plato de lentejas?” eating a plate of lentils?”
Porque no…no era normal para mí y— Because it wasn’t…wasn’t normal for me and—
Pero bueno. But anyway.
Poco a poco te vas acostumbrado Little by little you get used to it
y vas cambiando algunas cositas. and you change little things.
Pero yo de momento, But for the moment I,
como todavía puedo, since I still can,
hago sobre las doce y media o la una, around 12:30 or 1:00 I make,
hago la comida más fuerte [mm-hmm] I make the heavier meal [mm-hmm]
y luego por la noche, and later in the evening,
ya en casa comemos un poco más…más ligeros. at home we eat a little more…more light.
Luis Ya. Yeah.
Raquel Sí. Yes.
