Antonina llegamos a Miami. We arrived in Miami.
Imagínense, nosotros aprendimos inglés en Bolivia, Just imagine, we learned English in Bolivia,
pero es otra cosa muy diferente but it´s another very different thing
estar en el lugar donde hablan puro inglés. to be in the place where they speak only (purely) English.
¿Te acuerdas? No entendíamos nada. Do you remember? We didn´t understand anything.
Tatiana Exacto, nosotros venimos con una base Exactly, we came with a foundation
pensando que todo el mundo nos iba a entender thinking that the whole world was going to understand us
porque habíamos estudiado un poco en el colegio. because we had studied a little in school.
Allá en el colegio, diferente de acá, ahm, In school there, different from here, um,
todos los colegios, la mayoría, all the schools, the majority,
me imagino que un ochenta por ciento I imagine that eighty percent
tiene inglés como una materia regular. have English as a regular subject.
Materia regular significa que lo tienes que avanzar Regular subject means that you have to take it (advance it)
todos los días como matemáticas, every day like mathematics,
lenguaje, ciencias naturales / sociales. language, natural / social sciences
Entonces nosotros teníamos una base So we had a foundation
y también habíamos tomado unos cursos, and we had also taken some classes,
pero cuando llegamos a Miami but when we got to Miami
y empezamos a hablar con todas las personas, and we started to talk with all the people,
estábamos perdidas. we were lost.
Antonina Pero aun así algo que nos ayudó aprender inglés, But even so something that helped us to learn English,
ahora que ustedes están aprendiendo español, now that you are all learning Spanish,
es que hablamos inglés is that we spoke English
sin importar si lo hablábamos bien, without mattering if we spoke it well,
si lo hablábamos mal, if we spoke it poorly,
especialmente entre nosotras siempre hablábamos inglés especially between us we would always speak English
porque es la única forma que nos dimos cuenta because it's the only way that we realized
que podemos aprender y podemos mejorar. that we can learn and we can get better.
Tatiana Ah-jah y lo...y lo más chistoso era que nosotros, digamos, Uh-huh and the...and the funniest part was that we, let's say,
a veces no queríamos que nadie nos entienda sometimes we wouldn't want anyone to understand us
o quería--en Bolivia, no queríamos que nadie nos diga, or we want--in Bolivia, we didn't want anyone to tell us,
"oh, sabemos de lo que están diciendo." "oh, we know what you are talking about."
O por no chismear y decir las cosas en la oreja, Or to not gossip and say things in your ear,
decidíamos hablar inglés y nadie nos podía entender. we decided to speak English and no one could understand us.
Entonces por eso decidimos también venir aquí a Estados Unidos. So that's why we decided to also come here to the United States.
Antonina Y practicar el idioma que están aprendiendo And practicing the language that you are learning
va a ser muy muy importante, is going to be very very important,
aunque no lo hablen bien, even though you don't speak it well,
que traten de hablarlo try to speak it
porque así ustedes van a tener más confianza because that's how you are going to have more confidence
cuando hablen con otras personas, when you talk with other people,
van a mejorar su pronunciación, you are going to improve your pronunciation,
y si ustedes hablan con personas que son nativos, and if you talk with people that are natives,
como nosotros hablamos con personas que hablan inglés, like we talk with people that speak English,
van a poder escucharles y mejorar así, you're going to be able to listen to them and get better like that,
pero no tienen que tener miedo, but you don't have to be afraid,
tienen que hablar. you have to speak.
Entonces un consejo que les damos es que So some advice that we give you is that
ustedes pueden hablar you can speak
sin importar si lo hacen bien o mal. without mattering if you do it well or poorly.
